Batak berries are harvested in the wild by the Batak and Toba ethnic groups in North Sumatra, Indonesia. These berries grow on a prickly shrub: zanthoxylum acanthopodium and are similar to Szechuan berries. The Batak people in Indonesia are famous for their great musicians and orators, but also for their architecture and active opposition to the Indonesian authorities. They live in communities near Lake Toba. These berries are also called Andaliman peppers or Batak peppers. They grow at an altitude of 1,500 m north of Tapanuli and Samosir, near Lake Toba. This region is known as the Kingdom of Batak. The traditional Batak dish is Ikan mas arsik or Golden Fish with Arsiko sauce made from carp caught in Lake Toba. Carp are prepared in a woke and served with sauce, seasoned with ginger, shallots, garlic, galangal, lemongrass, turmeric and chili.
