In the late 18th century, British Captain James Cook wrote of the high quality salt mined in Hawaii, but claimed that “the salt is reddish and dirty”. A few centuries later, this ‘dirty’ salt has become the salt of choice for famous chefs and gourmets around the world. It is Hawaiian red salt, which is cherry red in colour due to the high iron content of the salt. Similar to black salt, red salt is extracted using red volcanic clay in the salt-making process. Highly revered and used by the local population for ritual blessings and religious festivals, this salt is now also found in the kitchens of some of the world’s most famous restaurants. This salt contains around 80 different minerals that are beneficial to our bodies.

Appearance
