Phu Quoc Island, also known as the “Emerald Island” due to its natural treasures. This island is located in the Gulf of Thailand, off the coast of Cambodia. The island has belonged to Vietnam since 1945.
Pepper was brought to this island by the Chinese in the 18th century. Currently, only a very small amount of pepper is grown on the island, but they are of extremely high quality. The island grows about 1.5 tons of pepper per hectare, compared to 8-10 tons per hectare in other regions of Vietnam, such as Dhaka. Harvesting of Phu Quoc peppers is done only by hand, from picking, washing to drying and sorting. Most pepper plantations are located in the center of the island, Cua Duange. Peppers are harvested from February to April. The locals call the peppers “Tiêu” and mostly use them with seafood, fish, and many other local dishes, first salting them with salt and adding a little lime.
