These long peppers originate from Northeast India where they are still found growing in the wild, at the foot of the Himalayan mountains. It is one of the first spices to ever reach Europe, and the English word ‘pepper’, the equivalent of which is found in many European languages, is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘pippali’.
This elongated pepper, reminiscent in shape of spring tree-flowered kittens, grows on dense shrubs. These peppers grow to a length of 3 cm and are harvested when the peppers are fully ripe and then dried in the sun.
Long pepper has stunning licorice, anise and cinnamon aromas that blend harmoniously with the slightly pungent and intense taste of pepper. We recommend seasoning lamb dishes, tomato sauce or cream desserts with this pepper. You can also use long peppers in a pepper mill, but you should crush them first in a pestle.
