Selim or “African pepper” berries are the dried fruit of the Xylopia aethiopica tree, grown in the wild throughout tropical Africa (Nigeria, Ethiopia, Togo, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire).

In Africa, Selim berries are often smoked, then ground with a pestle. They are traditionally used to replace peppers in fish, fried meat dishes and vegetable soups. Selim or Kili Pepper is found in Senegal’s famous Cafe Touba spice mix, along with coffee beans and cloves.

In Nigeria, these berries are used in a mixture of sui spices (ginger, peanuts, onions, garlic, salt, Cayenne pepper, Selim berries). This spice mix is used by street vendors selling roast beef and chicken skewers.
