The word tomato comes from the Inca word Tomalt. This plant was brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus, who discovered it in South America in the 15th century. Tomatoes were grown by the Incas in the Andean region and were then the size of cherry tomatoes. It took a good century for tomatoes to start growing in Europe, Spain and Italy, in Naples. Because of its color and shape, the tomato was christened pomodoro – a golden apple or a love apple. Tomatoes have long been thought to be poisonous, so for almost three hundred years they were considered an ornamental plant. It was not until the second half of the 18th century that the nutritional properties of these vegetables were recognized. Since then, tomatoes have become an integral part of Southern European cuisine. Not surprisingly, in the Provence region of France, tomatoes spread first. When the people of Provence left for Paris to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the storm of the Bastille in 1790. On July 14, they demanded tomatoes wherever they sat down for a snack.
